Journey to the West - Illustrated One Sheet

Screen Shot 2013-12-18 at 12.19.15 pm.png

When I first watched the trailer for Stephen Chow's latest film I thought, Woah! it reminds me of a show I grew up with in the UK... 'Monkey Magic'... As I researched a little more, turns out that this film by Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) is based on the same material! Very Crazy Cool... The film looks as crazy, if not more so than the TV show I was so fond of as a kid...

It is an absolute pleasure to be asked to illustrate a poster to promote this film for Magnolia Pictures and Magnet. This is another film that thematically lends itself to this kind of 'old school' advertising, my favourite kind!

It is so awesome to see a company looking towards illustrated posters to promote their films and feel very fortunate and proud to be a part of it…

The Poster art made its debut on CraveOnline and has had some nice feedback...

Screen Shot 2013-12-18 at 12.16.30 pm.png
“Yes, from the writer/director/star of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer comes a demon-fighting fantasy with a new poster in the Drew Struzan mold, just to sell you on its epicness.”
“It’s great to see what I would call a ‘classic’ illustrated movie poster being used as the primary marketing tool, much like artists Drew Struzan and John Alvin used to produce. Paul Shipper has a talent for portraying emotion and character in his pieces, this being no exception, and has captured what I expect to be the fun and humour of a Stephen Chow movie. In tone, it very much reminds me of the poster for Big Trouble in Little China.”

About the Film:

Based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature of the same name, Stephen Chow's ‘Journey To The West’ is a contemporary remake of the misadventures of a Buddhist monk as he makes a pilgrimage from China to India. - See more at: http://www.magnetreleasing.com/journeytothewest/

Star Wars - Reinterpretation of A New Hope

SW_ILLUSTRATED_ANH_HEADER_IMAGE.jpg

When Topps contacted me about this project, Part of me was screaming YES while the other was hesitant about even trying to reinterpretate this CLASSIC film poster... I was swayed by Mr Waldeck to go for it using my style of illustration... Along with 8 other selected artists who have each contributed their re-imagining of what is possibly one of the most well known film posters in history.

Original Illustration

For a bit of fun I wanted to see how the artwork would look with added Billing Block, Titles, with a little weathering and creases as though it had been folded up and been in storage for a number of years :)

Official AMC 'The Walking Dead' Art Print

Official AMC The Walking Dead Limited Edition Print Now Available (click to buy)

Official AMC The Walking Dead Limited Edition Print Now Available (click to buy)

As a relative newbie to the show, I honestly had avoided the series even though it was extremely popular, I've never been a big Zombie fan, but due to being asked to join in on this project with HCG and AMC I found myself renting season one, watching it in 5 days, then renting season 2 and watching it over a weekend... I am hooked!

What I loved so much about the story is that it is about the people, their characters and relationships, dealing with a reality that the World as they know it has pretty much come to an end...

I knew then how I wanted to tackle this piece... focusing on the Heroes, the people.

The Walking Dead Season 1 SDCC Poster by Drew Struzan

I recalled Drew Struzan creating a Zombie heavy SDCC poster for Season 1... I saw that and thought, well, thats what our heroes are facing right there...

How about we show the zombies point of view in this one...

Illustrating the Birth of Whiiite Comic Book

WHIIITE BLOG HEADER.jpg

My first fully illustrated comic book from cover to cover!...is here!

There has been blood, sweat and tears working on this project... I'm kidding!

It was however a huge challenge realising this story through to completion... A long process, and let me tell you, I have a new appreciation for the comic book artists that do this on a daily basis... you guys... HUGE RESPECT!

Here are some of the initial sketches I did on my iPad while working through the story with Chris and Aric (using Paper by 53)  and the final corresponding artwork finalised in Sketchbook Pro

See Ken Marino (literally) embrace his inner demon in this one-sheet for the newly-retitled BAD MILO @aintitcoolnews http://t.co/oX7aIh9WjQ

— Harry Knowles (@headgeek666) July 25, 2013

Some really nice words on the poster design from both of these sites - Thanks so much guys - pleased you dig it!

“Bloody Disgusting has premiered a new one-sheet for BAD MILO (formerly known as MILO), and they’re qualifying it as a contender for “best poster of the year”. I don’t blame them. This is more of a genuinely striking, tonally-ominous poster that we’ve seen for a theatrical release in recent memory.”
— Vincent Zahedi - Ain't It Cool News

Kudos to Gravillis Inc great working with them again.

The Lone Ranger - Illustrated Fan Poster

LONE RANGER FAN ART HEADER.jpg

When I first heard about Disney's Lone Ranger movie coming out - I thought, what a perfect movie for an illustrated one sheet! I got very excited to see what may come of the official poster...

I felt an opportunity had been missed and so, I decided to create a poster that I thought could be deemed worthy of The Lone Ranger...

I only hope you agree... much like the JJ Abrams Star Trek posters, this is a personal project, just for fun...and for the love of the old movie posters I grew up with.

I'm always listening to music while I work and in particular this track from the Lone Ranger Score by Hans Zimmer really got me pumped while working on the poster...

Back in 1981, The Legend of the Lone Ranger quite rightly had an illustrated poster... plus there are some comprehensives that Master Drew Struzan created for the film poster design...  and a collectable plate illustration from 1994

Saturday Morning TV Show - Batman

Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 1.26.47 PM.jpg

When I was a kid I watched many TV shows on Saturday mornings, but one of the earliest I can remember is watching re-runs of the old Batman TV series with Adam West in the lead role. When I was asked to participate in the latest Gallery show at L|td Gallery, this is what sprung to mind for me... Holy blast from the past Batman!...
