Official AMC 'The Walking Dead' Art Print

Official AMC The Walking Dead Limited Edition Print Now Available (click to buy)

Official AMC The Walking Dead Limited Edition Print Now Available (click to buy)

As a relative newbie to the show, I honestly had avoided the series even though it was extremely popular, I've never been a big Zombie fan, but due to being asked to join in on this project with HCG and AMC I found myself renting season one, watching it in 5 days, then renting season 2 and watching it over a weekend... I am hooked!

What I loved so much about the story is that it is about the people, their characters and relationships, dealing with a reality that the World as they know it has pretty much come to an end...

I knew then how I wanted to tackle this piece... focusing on the Heroes, the people.

The Walking Dead Season 1 SDCC Poster by Drew Struzan

I recalled Drew Struzan creating a Zombie heavy SDCC poster for Season 1... I saw that and thought, well, thats what our heroes are facing right there...

How about we show the zombies point of view in this one...

Complicated leader, Rick Grimes, the dark and mysterious katana-wielding Michonne, and Southern bad boy turned good, Daryl Dixon, are just a few of the iconic characters of this series that are portrayed in paintings, prints, and sculpture.

Saturday Morning TV Show - Batman

Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 1.26.47 PM.jpg

When I was a kid I watched many TV shows on Saturday mornings, but one of the earliest I can remember is watching re-runs of the old Batman TV series with Adam West in the lead role. When I was asked to participate in the latest Gallery show at L|td Gallery, this is what sprung to mind for me... Holy blast from the past Batman!...

Nothing was sweeter than waking up early, making your way to living room, and taking a journey 30 minutes at a time. Ltd is very excited to present our newest group art show: SATURDAY MORNING. Over 50 artists reflect upon a time when all they needed was a bowl of cereal, their pajamas....and the TV.

Star Trek: Origins - Illustrated Art Print

Screen Shot 2013-05-27 at 12.04.06 PM.jpg

Hot on the heels of my recent JJ Abrams NuTrek inspired Illustrated posters, I was introduced to Thomas Olivri over at Geek-Art in Paris. They hold exclusive gallery shows at Dernier Bar Avant la Fin du Monde (Last Bar Before the End of the World ). Their next show, Final Frontier is an Art Tribute to Star Trek and will also feature new art from my wonderfully talented friends Samuel Ho, Matt Ferguson, Marie Bergeron and many more.

Prints are very limited so if you have your eye on something, don' t hang about. I am told there will be only 20 of each artwork available!

Star Trek Artshow FInal Frontier-2.jpg

When I began thinking about what to create for this show, I realised the Trek Universe is vast, many vessels, many Captains, many different shows, I could pretty much go in any direction on this. It was however a no brainer after tackling the latest incarnation of Star Trek to now 'boldly go' back to the roots of Star Trek's memorable characters from the original series.

I wanted to keep a similar illustrated movie poster feel to the Illustrations I had just recently created for Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness. The prints will measure 50 x 70 cm (19.7 x 27.5" approx).

Hope you like it...

Live Long and Prosper!

Man Of Steel

Screen Shot 2013-05-21 at 10.58.44 AM.jpg

A daunting prospect for me was figuring out how to tackle this. I knew I really wanted to do a film poster style illustration featuring the new Superman, but figuring out how to go about it, the designing of the poster layout...

Something about Superman and the awesome legacy that we all know and love makes it hard to touch and I have to say, Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, and Hans Zimmer, scoring the movie, along with everyone on the production, they all deserve massive credit from what I have seen and heard so far. They honour the Characters, the Story, the Legacy with a new spin and look that is quite different but I have totally bought into it. And so, I really wanted to try and give this poster art a feel of the new film but a different look and an alternative to the photographic posters that are being used to promote the film.

I thought about it for a long while, toying with so many ideas, that just didnt cut it - was I trying to be too clever...? then it hit me. It's the Man Of Steel...! I need Superman, front and centre, looking hard as... 'Steel'... and that was the best place for me to start.

I really wanted to show Superman's heritage, a little of where he came from, his birth Parents on Krypton and also his relationship with his Father on Earth - these are the foundations of who Superman or Kal-El is and grows to become. It was important for me to have it in there. Scouring the internet for reference material, there actually wasn't that much to my surprise, so I did the best with what I could. I can not wait for this movie, the trailer is possibly one of the greatest ever created... Bring on the Man of Steel!!

The print will be available this weekend at Hero Complex Gallery, Los Angeles as part of their upcoming show 'Arch Nemesis'

More details to come soon.

Get Lucky Punk

Screen Shot 2013-05-08 at 4.32.05 PM.png

I do love me some Daft Punk. And boy, oh boy this new album coming out soon is going to be amazing! Random Access Memories will take you back to the roots of Disco with some incredible guest artists - just feast your eyes and ears on the Collaborator Series videos on www.daftpunk.com to get a feel for the groove...

The art show is inspired by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk. To celebrate the release of Daft Punk’s first album in eight years, Gauntlet Gallery will feature works by over 40 painters, sculptors , digital and screen print artists, each of whom has created an original work of art inspired by Daft Punk.

I approached my piece as a promotional poster for the first single that was to be released from 'Random Access Memories' - 'Get Lucky' featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. I instantly loved this track and had it practically on repeat during the whole creation of this piece. Hope you like it..

'Walt' - A Tribute to the Most Oscar Nominated Man on the Planet

Screen Shot 2013-02-07 at 2.05.11 PM.jpg

When it came time to decide on an illustration for the upcoming 'Oscar Legends'  Show at Hero Complex Gallery I decided to honor the person with the most Academy Award Nominations and Wins, Walt Disney. With a total of 59 nominations, 22 wins and has 4 honorary awards... One word, Legend. A Legend that has brought so much joy to our World beginning with 'Steam Boat Willie' and the birth of Mickey Mouse, through ground-breaking animation and film, and not forgetting the Happiest Places on Earth, Disneyland/Disney World....  His legacy continues since his passing in 1966. With the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and more recently Lucasfilm, the Disney magic is touching even more people than ever before and spanning many different genres.

I can still remember my first time at Disneyland, Calif. back in 1981, I was just 5 years old and can recall it with great clarity... Good times.

Illustrating The Time Machine

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 2.15.28 PM.jpg

Gizmos and Gadgets is the theme for the next Bottleneck Gallery show and after playing with ideas for the Rocketeer (my first concept) I was told a few others were doing this so had to let it go. Still hoping to get to draw the hood ornament one of these days...

Next idea was something from another of my all time favorite films, Back to the Future. after exploring the gadgets for BTTF 2 the Hoverboard, the Air Mags self lacing shoes, self fitting and drying jacket and all the other future visions from that film it soon dawned on me that the greatest gadget in the franchise was actually the Time Machine itself. And like Doc Brown said, if you gonna build a time machine why not do it with style!

It was still a challenge to come up with something that hadn't been done before and I wanted to try something a little different.

Being such well loved films there are a lot of great art pieces already out there, including the iconic one sheet illustrations by Drew Struzan!

I can only hope that this take on BTTF will connect with a few of you out there the way it does with me. The DeLorean has always been one of the coolest cars on the planet (thanks to the films) and I wanted to try and capture the car and the essence of the time travel device and its heart, the Flux Capacitor, without including the main cast in a way that when when you see it you know exactly what it is. It wouldn't be Back to the Future without the DeLorean.

The show opens on the 18 Jan and I have 2 prints in the show. Stay tuned at bottleneckgallery.com and on @paulshipper for more details on the prints next week! Links to each piece in the gallery show below:

The Gang's All Here - Star Wars heads to NYC

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 2.04.25 PM.jpg

Bottleneck Gallery's next show, 'The Gang's All Here' Begins November 9th and I chose to illustrate the gang from one of my all time favorite films since I was a kid. Star Wars: A New Hope. The Original, the one that started it all.

Gangs All Here - Star Wars - Preview.JPG

The premise of this piece is like an old, well loved family portrait. The song 'Memories, Friends and 8x10's' was ringing through my head when I was thinking about what I should do for the show.

Band of Brothers and Flight of the Conchords Prints at Bottleneck Gallery NY

Bottleneck Story Graphic_600px.jpg
My first Gallery work is being shown at Bottleneck Gallery NYC among a host of awesome talents including Mark Englert, Barry Blakenship, Chris Garofalo and Samuel Ho. They recently had their opening of the gallery with this show and is still running until the 28th Sept 2012, so if you are in NYC I recommend you head on over to check out this new Gallery and all the great work they have on show and for sale. A large portions of the proceeds go to charity and you get to walk away with a pretty unique piece of art! This month is their first show and it’s theme is Inspired by Premium Cable TV. I chose HBO first of all because I Loved Band of Brothers, and had to do a Flight of the Conchords piece (NZ-NYC Connection). The charity is the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research.

The art on show is mostly prints and you can pick up limited edition reproductions of my work there. They are printed to the highest specification Giclée's and I was on hand to proof all the prints sent out to the gallery. Each hand signed and numbered. there is an edition of 20 of a smaller 16x24” of each piece and also a full size 20x30 reproduction of each that is also available to purchase that have been framed and on show at the gallery. The originals were created on 20 x 30” illustration board, and created by my fair hand… The originals are illustrated on Gessoed Crescent Illustration Board using acrylic airbrush  inks and Prismacolor pencils.

These Giclée prints seriously came out amazingly well and I am really proud to have them out there.

I want to wish Bottleneck Gallery all the very best with this and all the coming shows, they have done a great job and I look forward to being part of some of your future shows!

There is a great review of the show online, be sure to head over to Posterocalypse they have picked their favorite pieces from the show and critiqued them, well worth a read ;)

Works for a Gallery Show

I have created two new illustrations recently for an upcoming gallery show at the Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn, New York, USA

The title of the show is “More Than You Imagined: Art Inspired by Premium Cable” and will run from September 7th up until September 28th and its for a good cause too! The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research…

I chose 2 shows from HBO:
Band of Brothers and Flight of the Conchords

Band of Brothers was an absolutely jaw dropping series that I could not miss when it aired
and Flight of the Conchords had to be done as I am living in New Zealand and the show was filmed in NYC so it was a no-brainer!

Hope you enjoy the art. 1/1 Signed Giclée prints (20x30") will be on display/for sale and a small print run of 20 signed prints (16x24") both paintings will be available first come first served...

the prints came out specatacularly, I proofed them myself to ensure the quality.

Visit the gallery website here: Bottleneck Gallery
The drop goes live Mon 10th Sept between 8:50 - 9:10 EST
